Testimonial from a HeartStart Participant (June 2013)

My journey began in Feb 2006 at age 68 I had Triple Bypass Surgery.  In May 2006 I joined the HeartStart Program participating in the Walking Track Exercise Program and after a few weeks progressing to including 2 Water Aerobics 4 Heart Sessions into my exercise regime.  I attended a 10 week Health Education Wellness Series conducted by Professional Educators covering several health areas.  These programs all run by HeartStart enabled me to maintain flexibility, mobility, balance, coordination and most importantly self-management. 

In the beginning I found the exercise programs quite challenging, however my commitment and perseverance enabled me to set achievable goals in my Exercise, Nutrition and Health.  Incidentally all of the above programs are free or minimal cost. 

During 2010 my health took a radical turn and I was diagnosed with Chronic Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).  I could no longer manage the Walking Track Program and had to change to attending the Water Aerobics 4 Heart Sessions 3 times weekly which I still attend knowing the benefits despite an occasional RA relapse.  I am also a member of Heart Support and along with support from my GP and Specialists I maintain my health and wellbeing and continue my exercise activities.
